Many works of genius came from times of adversity. MADD started by a mom who lost her daughter to a drunk driver. I started Age at Home after losing 4 family members in 3 years who wanted to remain in their homes until the end of life.
There comes a time when the way you have done things, your role in life, your career, job or relationships no longer fit. Maybe your kid goes off to college, and the mom role changes. A pandemic can be your catalyst.
1. Passion for job/career disappears: For me personally, there was no excitement or wow factor with my old career. (But FYI, I use my old skills incorporated into my new role I developed). You don’t need to get rid of the old, dust it off, and repurpose it!
2. A nagging urge to do something (even if it does not make sense): When I went back to school for RN, I had no idea that Covid would change healthcare and make my new role amazingly in demand.
3. Personally I took up wakeboarding after a divorce. This gave me not only physical but mental strength. And I found this to be an anti aging ‘hobby’ that created an empowered new me. My pic wakeboarding is in Marlo Thomas’ book!!! My wakeboarding became the anthem to my Age Well Expert blog series
Here are the clues that it is time to make a pivot in your life:
1. There is a nagging restlessness
2. You can no longer concentrate or lose interest in what you did before
3. You have physical symptoms: can’t sleep, anxiety, listlessness, anger, or you cannot concentrate. Listen to your body which holds all of the clues for your happiness.
4. Your daydreaming is more productive and makes you Happier! than your daily activity
5. You lost your job due to the PANDEMIC!
So what to do and how to pivot?
1. What gives you a feeling of passion?
2. What do you daydream about?
3. What is someone else doing that you admire or even envy?
4. What is it that you cannot stop thinking about, that gives you pleasure?
5. What do you do that makes you lose track of time: People who love what they do often say: I can’t believe I get paid for this! I would do it for free! (This is a clue that you are wired for, set up for, and completely in tuned with)
Take the thought, idea or passion and look for creative ways to incorporate it into your life. You do not need to forfeit everything else. It does not have to be either/or. You can keep your day job. Start small, but just start.
Examine old beliefs about this new thing so you don’t sabotage:
Example: You want to become an actor, but you have a belief that being onstage is too risky, too big, or too full of fear of failure.
