These lazy days of summer bring an insidious danger to seniors in our community. Seniors have less body fluid volume. Because of this, any deficit in fluid can easily and quickly cause serious conditions. Warmer weather is a time when seniors are at risk for dehydration, urinary tract infections, confusion, delirium, and heat stroke. These in turn can lead to cardiac conditions, kidney compromise and a myriad of other serious maladies.

When asking my senior clients about their water consumption, the consensus is usually an abashed confession that they should but forget to drink enough. If a senior does not have air conditioning, they can quickly become listless, disoriented, and have a loss of appetite. Unfortunately, these symptoms can happen so quickly that they do not realize when they should reach out for help. Without treatment, these symptoms can easily turn into more serious conditions.

Urinary tract infections in younger adults are usually recognized by pain upon urination, prompting them to seek medical attention. However, seniors often do not have this symptom. Therefore the urinary tract infection (UTI) goes unchecked, untreated, and can quickly turn to sepsis and organ shut down. A common initial symptom of a UTI for a senior is confusion or behavioral change.

Water alone is not enough. Electrolytes are an essential element to replenish. Low electrolytes can cause cardiac arrhythmias and other serious issues. There are many electrolyte supplements, and even drinks infused with electrolytes. Make sure however to read the ingredients in any electrolyte replacement products. Many are chock full of sugars and sodium which can interfere with seniors who have kidney issues or are diabetic.

Many seniors are on multiple medications. Some of them add to or can exacerbate dehydration.

Observe and look out for behavioral changes. Even lethargy is a sign something is off. This is a time to keep a close eye on your senior person. Keep them cool, hydrated, well nourished, and getting regular medical attention
